Schools Green Ambassadors

The Academy of St Francis of Assisi

The Academy of St Francis of Assisi is one of the first of a new breed of ‘green’ schools emerging throughout the country. The Academy is the first inter-faith school that focuses on the environment.

Not only are the school facilities highly sustainable and environmentally efficient, but environmental issues have also been incorporated into the curriculum to ensure future generations understand their own effect on the world and how they can live sustainably. Green credentials include:

  • The Academy has been designed so that students and staff learn about the environment and sustainability just by coming to school!
  • An atrium captures the sun, heating the building.
  • Twelve photovoltaic panels providing up to 10% of The Academy’s electricity.
  • A display panel in the cyber café shows students how much electricity is being generated at any time and how much carbon dioxide has been saved so far.
  • Year 7 students are currently undertaking a project to design gardens to grow and sell healthy produce.
  • The curriculum is being developed to provide real-life learning opportunities with sustainability at the centre. The buildings and grounds are used in the curriculum.
  • Some of The Academy’s furniture is made from recycled materials, including desks made from recycled yoghurt pots.
